April 18 Conference Celebrates National Fair Housing Month and 36 Years of Fair Housing in Delaware

April 4, 2005

Dover - "Fair Housing is a cornerstone of our nation's historic push to create 'One America'-an America where opportunity and success are within reach of all our citizens; where no one is denied an opportunity to build a better life."-Andrew Cuomo, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

April is National Fair Housing Month, and this year marks the 36th anniversary of the Delaware Fair Housing Act and the 37th anniversary of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, known as the Federal Fair Housing Law.

In observance of all these landmarks, the State Human Relations Commission and the Division of Human Relations will be holding the 12th Annual Fair Housing Conference on April 18, 2005, at the Sheraton Dover Hotel in Dover, Del. The conference takes place from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

The program features guest speaker Gordon L. Joyner, Esquire, Executive Director of the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity. Joyner litigated the historic 1990 Herron v. Blackwell case, the first lawsuit to go to trial under the federal Fair Housing Act. The Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity is the state's civil rights enforcement department in the areas of housing and employment discrimination.

Senator Margaret Rose Henry will address the State of Delaware's progress on Fair Housing and will preside at the signing of the Joint Fair Housing Proclamation, in observance of April as National Fair Housing Month.

The 12th Annual Fair Housing Conference offers four workshops: "Policies & Practices in the Appraisal Lending Industry"; "Fair Housing Law"; "Disability Law: Reasonable Accommodation"; and "Outreach and Education." The conference fee is $40.00. For registration information, please call (302) 577-5050, (302) 739-4567, or (302) 856-5331 or visit www.state.de.us/hr/.
