an exhibit at the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes
Opens December 2, 2004
Lewes, DE – See additional examples of the unique collection of Delaware-made quilts at the Zwaanendael Museum on Kings Highway and Savannah Road in Lewes beginning December 2. The “Quilting on the Line” exhibit is an extension of the Delaware State Museums’ ongoing Stitches of Art and Comfort: Delaware Quilts, 1740-2003 exhibit featured at the Visitor Center and Galleries in Dover that runs until May 31, 2005.
Six quilts representing a unique era of patchwork quilting in Sussex County will be hanging on display upstairs in the Zwaanendael museum, along with objects associated with the care and use of quilts in the early 1900’s. The quilts selected for the “Quilting on the Line” display were chosen from the 20 quilts crafted by Sallie and Sarah Carey of Cool Spring and Milton, Delaware. These woman did most of their patchwork quilting in the mid- 1800’s. These works of art are part of the museums’ permanent collection of 100 original quilts that feature other diverse designs and patterns.
The Zwaanendael exhibit opens during Lewes’ annual Hospitality Night on December 2 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitors that night will be treated to refreshments and holiday seasonal music while strolling through the festively decorated museum, whose foliage display is courtesy of the Sussex Gardening Society.
