The Future Leaders Internship Initiative (FLii) program is a summer program that provides professional development and opportunities to high potential high school students eager to gain real world experiences and better understand pathways to successful careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through government. The program exposes students to opportunities within government agencies that support STEM, such as the Delaware Department of Technology and Information, the Delaware Department of Agriculture, the Delaware Department of Labor, the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the Delaware Department of Transportation, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, and other state agencies.
In partnership with Leading Youth Through Empowerment (LYTE), a Wilmington-based nonprofit focused on opportunity and access for high school students, and Reed Development Group, a diversity, equality and inclusion solutions firm, FLii interns undergo lectures and learning opportunities. As part of the program, interns are expected to complete a summer-long case study utilizing analytical, technical, and interpersonal skills gained from exposure to government speakers and developmental workshops.
The 2021 FLii internship class consisted of two cohorts: Cohort I, FLii Mastermind 2020, and Cohort II, Mastermind 2021. Mastermind 2020 Interns received a hands-on internship experience at a participating state agency while Mastermind 2021 Interns participated in a virtual Speaker Series, in which they heard directly from government officials, government leaders, and other professionals.
